For carpal tunnel pain, TENS pads are typically placed near the wrist, hand, and elbow, surrounding the painful area in a straight path with each pad at least 1 inch apart and never touching. If you're dealing with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or similar hand and wrist pain, this can make a real difference: proper pad placement helps DR-HO'S TENS therapy deliver temporary pain relief when numbness, tingling, or aching starts to interfere with everyday tasks.

DR-HO'S TENS products combine TENS & EMS technologies to provide pain relief, and can be used in many areas around the body including the neck, shoulders, arms, back, hip, legs, and feet. Though TENS therapy cannot be used to fix the underlying condition, it can provide pain relief in a moment of need. This guide explains how to use TENS & EMS technology for carpal tunnel pain, where to place the pads for the best results, the different replacement pad options, how TENS, EMS, and AMP technology work, and a few general tips to help you get more from each session.

The DR-HO'S pad placement charts series is a helpful way to understand how to properly use your TENS device. Find out the pad placement that will help you get the most out of every TENS therapy session.

DR-HO’S Pad Placement Charts: A Guide to TENS Therapy

DR-HO'S pain therapy devices use TENS, EMS, NMES and our proprietary AMP technology to accomplish:

1. Relief of pain associated with sore and aching muscles due to exercise or normal day-to-day activities.

2. Symptomatic relief and management of chronic, intractable pain and for relief of pain associated with arthritis.
3. Stimulation in healthy muscles to improve and facilitate muscle performance.
4. Increased local blood circulation in healthy muscles.

What are TENS, EMS, NMES and AMP?

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) gently uses electrical stimulation and electrical impulses to help block pain signals for carpal tunnel pain relief and provide temporary relief of pain. It is also a drug-free option for pain management that may help relieve symptoms such as numbness, discomfort, and wrist pain. Additionally, TENS therapy is thought to aid in the release of endorphins — a naturally-occurring chemical that may aid in providing pain relief. However, evidence for effectiveness in carpal tunnel syndrome is limited. For comfort, intensity should be adjusted from low upward, and use should not cause pain or strong muscle contractions.

EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) gently stimulates the muscles, causing them to contract and relax in order to increase local circulation and soothe soreness. Stimulating healthy muscles will strengthen and support the areas of pain while improving muscle performance.

NMES (Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation) targets specific nerve pathways to stimulate muscle contractions, helping to re-educate muscles that have become dysfunctional.

DR-HO's proprietary AMP (Auto Modulated Pulse) technology provides over 300 different stimulations that vary in wavelength, frequency and rest periods. These stimulations are programmed to automatically change to keep your body unfamiliar with the therapy. This will ensure your body gets the most out of every session.

Types of DR-HO'S TENS Replacement Pads

You will receive two different types of pads when you order your DR-HO'S TENS therapy device.

Small Gel Body Pads:
These long-lasting, highly-conductive small pads are sized to target smaller, more sensitive muscles such as your neck, arms and hands.

Large Gel Body Pads:
These larger pads are also long-lasting and highly conductive. They are designed for larger muscles such as your back, hips and legs.

If cared for properly, both types of gel pads can be used between 70-100 times before they should be replaced. You can order Large Pad Replacement Kits and Small Pad Replacement Kits at any time. You can also browse DR-HO'S accessories for other helpful products.

Important Notes for Pad Placement

Here are some important tips to consider no matter where you are placing your pads:

  1. Always place electrode pads on clean, dry, healthy skin, and avoid placing them over broken or irritated skin

  2. Place pads near or surrounding the painful area, at least 1 inch apart

  3. Make sure there is a linear path between the two pads

  4. Do not let the pads touch

  5. Wet the pads with a little bit of water before placing them on the painful area

TENS Pad Placement Instructions: Elbow, Wrist & Hands

To treat carpal tunnel syndrome with a tens unit, use at least two pads for proper placement as part of this non-invasive treatment. For tens unit placement, put one electrode on the palm-side wrist and position the other on the forearm just below the wrist so the tens machine for carpal follows the median nerve pathway into the hand and fingers, which may help ease nerve pain. An alternative tens electrode placement is to bracket the wrist across the affected area; this electrode placement can also work well as a machine for carpal tunnel option when unit placement needs adjusting. This is a common approach to treat carpal tunnel syndrome and supports effective control of symptoms and movement. Sessions generally last 20 to 30 minutes. It can also be combined with a neutral wrist splint, a first-line treatment, for more complete care.
