Back pain sufferers know that whether it's a dull ache or a sharp and pain, it’s debilitating. As much as 80% of the population will experience back problems in their lifetime – regardless of their age.

Back pain may occur from a strain or other structural problems. Muscles and ligaments are strained with improper lifting techniques and sudden, awkward movements. A structural problem has several origins:

  • Ruptured discs
  • Sciatica
  • Arthritis
  • Abnormal curvature of the spine
  • Osteoporosis

Back pain can manifest as acute pain or chronic pain. Acute pain lasts less than 3-6 months and is often a result of a strain.

How to Get Rid of Back Pain

Chronic pain can cause ongoing discomfort usually from a structural condition. It's important to identify the form of back pain you are experiencing to find the solution that will get you back to living pain-free.

How TENS Therapy Helps Alleviate Back Pain

TENS therapy or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation is an innovative technology that has been scientifically proven to relieve muscle tension, alleviate pain, and increase circulation. One of greatest benefits of TENS is how easy it is to use at home and on the go. TENS devices are available for sale after being tested and used in clinical practice.

Using TENS for back pain is easy and effective. You simply engage in the following 6 steps:

1. Unpack Your TENS Unit

Open your unit and ensure that you have the portable device and the self-adhesive pads. If the machine you selected requires a battery, ensure that working batteries are inserted or that the unit is fully charged.

2. Correctly Place Gel Pads

First, identify the area of back pain you would like to place your gel pads. Wet the gel pads or use a gel pad gel to ensure they will adhere to the skin. Place several gel pads on the area where you experience pain. This could be on the lumbar region of the spine or the upper back near the shoulders.  Never place the pads directly over the spinal column.

3. Power On

Time to turn on your TENS device and power up!

4. Select an Intensity

Depending on the device you have chosen there may be a variety of intensity levels. Start on a low intensity and gradually increase the intensity to your comfort level. You should feel a massaging action and a deep sensation in the muscles.

5. Select a Mode

Not every TENS machine comes with specific modes. If your machine does, choose one you would like to try. Each module should simulate a different massage technique or sensation. Start with a gentle mode and work your way up to trying a more vigorous setting.

6. Set an Automatic Timer

If you are planning on using your machine for an extended period of time, set a timer. It is not recommended that a TENS machine be overused. If you are using the machine before bed or believe you may doze off, set a timer for 10 or 20 minutes. Many devices have built in timers. If yours doesn't, set one on your phone or clock.

Clinical Trials Outline How TENS Helps Relieve Pain

Dr. Stuart M. McGill's Study
Dr. Stuart M. McGill conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of DR-HO’S TENS device, the Pain Therapy System. The study looked at 41 men and women from an outpatient clinic. Scientific Studies conducted by Dr. Stuart M. McGill, Ph.D. and commissioned by Dr. Michael Ho tested:

  • The effects of DR-HO'S muscle stimulation device on pain and muscle spasm
  • Changes in tissue oxygenation, as quantified by Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS), while treated with DR-HO'S muscle stimulation device
  • Description and comparison of traditional TENS to DR-HO'S TENS device (high intensity, modulated TENS)

Conclusive Findings
The above studies found that DR-HO'S TENS device can:

  • Significantly relieve pain
  • Significantly reduce muscle tension and spasms
  • Increase tissue oxygenation
  • Increase circulation

Hi. Have been interested in the Pain Therapy for a few years. My now 31 yr old daughter injured her back ;lower spine) in gym class when she was in Gr 3 & has suffered from lower back pain periodically since. I never had the money to buy anything, but now I'm receiving OAS & CPP. Now, my nephew's wife who is 49 is diagnosed with lupus & now fibromyalgia. I'm wondering if TENS would be beneficial for either my daughter &/or my neohew's wife.
