After an injury that left her unable to move for 8 months and a failed back surgery, Mel says there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.

In our “Chronic Pain Warrior” series, we feature real people telling their unique story of living with chronic pain in their own words.

What kind of pain do you have and what challenges do you face living with this type of pain?

I have pain in multiple locations in my back.

My upper back consists of bones popping out, which brings on severe muscle spasms. The result: I’m not able to move or get proper breaths in, bringing on the feeling of a knife in the chest.

In my lower back there is a throbbing pain accompanied by muscle spasms. Due to the nerves being impacted by the accident, I have what I call a “lightning bolt” pain that will shoot down my legs. My legs will become numb with a heavy weakness, at times so severe all I can do is yell and breathe through the pain.

“The simplest of activities from cleaning my home to going to the grocery store are sometimes the hardest tasks.”

I’ve had to change the type of work I was in due to the extreme changes in my body. I can no longer pursue my dream of rescue fire fighting. The simplest of activities from cleaning my home to going to the grocery store are sometimes the hardest tasks. I’m excluded from a lot of activities with friends and I count on my friends to help me out a lot when I can’t handle the pain.

What helps you get through your pain? Has DR-HO’S played any part in your journey to find pain relief?

Before the surgery my pain was so severe I was on countless amounts of medications and too often thought “this is it!”... today’s the day I’m going to end it.

I would wear my DR-HO’S machine for 12-24 hours on those harder days to lessen the pain. While nothing would take that pain away, my DR-HO’S device allowed me to hang in my darkest hours. My surgeon had even stated because I had my machine on so often it probably helped lessen the amount of nerve damage I had.

After the surgery, I was able to decrease the amount of medication I took because of my DR-HO’S machine. In the recovery process in general, we all try and push ourselves to not give up, but unfortunately, with that mindset, we end up hurting ourselves and losing energy a lot faster.

Immediately after any physiotherapy treatment and exercise, I turned to my DR-HO’S machine that helped me recover more than anything I was trying.

Now that I have better days my DR-HO’S device is my first line of defence before anything else.

Do you have any advice or inspiration you would like to share with others who suffer from the same type of pain?

Get someone to help you figure out the best resting positions for your body because you’ll need them. With my injury, I could barely move for 8 months.

Also, when you hit the ceiling of your pain tolerance your body will need as much rest as it can get. The rest won’t feel like much, but trust me, it helps.

The most important thing I can ever say is this: I know you feel hopeless, I sadly know how often you may want to end it all because of the pain your in, but you can and will get through the next 60 seconds, the next 5 minutes, the next hour, and the next day!

Do not let your mind picture a future filled with pain like that! Our minds are a dangerous place when all you can see is pain, but it’s also a beautiful place when we get past the numbness of knowing nothing but pain… I promise you!

Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?

My surgery was a failure and I will forever live with the changes it made to my body. I still experience many emotions about it. I still have days I don’t want to keep going but it’s all part of the process, so it’s okay to feel these emotions. But I also have moments of pure joy that bring tears to my eyes. Life has gifted me with the ability to be more thankful, too see beauty I’ve overlooked and to cherish others around me more than I ever have before and it’s because of the pain journey I’ve had to live with.

I hope we all find our happy place and know everyone with injuries feel alone but we’re not.
