For migraine sufferers, many days are a constant balancing act between fighting off the symptoms of their headaches, as well as attending to the many tasks they need to perform on a given day.

Along with the crippling pain that comes with the headache, those who experience migraines may also experience warning signs called the "aura," which may include loss of vision, fatigue and difficulty speaking. Finding effective ways of treating these headaches is a major consideration, so individuals with migraines should think about the following tips when one of them hits.

1. It's All in the Neck

Many people who experience migraines may not realize that their pain could very well stem from their neck. Stiff muscles and tension between the C1 and C2 vertebrae - located just below the skull - are often the causes of these intense headaches. This happens because pressure between these vertebrae can restrict blood flow to the head, as well as pinch nerves and disrupt brain connectivity. Non-invasive treatments such as DR-HO'S Neck Comforter work to relax the shoulders, neck and head to provide relief without medication or surgery.

2. Be Aware of Your Triggers

One of the best ways to prevent the occurrence of migraines is to ensure that you're aware of specific triggers that may cause them in the first place. According to CanadianLiving.com, factors such as excessive amounts of caffeine, a lack of food or exercise, poor sleeping habits, excessive alcohol consumption or a combination of multiple triggers could bring on a migraine, so it's vital for sufferers to be mindful of these and take caution.

3. Avoid Direct Sunlight

For reasons unknown to doctors, direct sunlight or glare is also known to be a migraine trigger, and it can be quite uncomfortable for a person experiencing one. If migraine sufferers can lie down for a nap, this is one of the best ways of avoiding direct sunlight and lessening the duration of symptoms. Otherwise, bringing along a pair of sunglasses each day is a great failsafe to keep in mind.

4. Use Drug-Free Pain Relief Options Like TENS Therapy

While over-the-counter pain medications may dull the pain, many individuals who experience migraines have found that using electrical stimulation on sensitive areas could lessen the duration of migraine pain and reduce their frequency. According to BBC Health, these transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) machines can function on high or low frequencies to serve a number of pain relief functions that could prove to be more beneficial than conventional migraine prescriptions for some individuals. DR-HO'S Pain Therapy System Pro is a shining example of the benefits of TENS therapy. Users can simply attach adhesive pads to the affected muscles, then activate the device to deliver controlled, safe electrical stimulation that works to relieve pain.

How? When the electrical stimulation floods the nervous system, it distracts pain receptors in the brain from properly registering pain. Think of pain as a cell-phone signal that needs to be transmitted from the body part to the brain via the nerves and spinal cord. TENS therapy is a way of preventing this signal from properly transmitting. This is what makes TENS such an effective temporary pain relief option.

While the Pain Therapy System Pro pads should not be directly attached to the head to treat headaches, placing them on the shoulders and back of the neck can help with migraines. The electrical stimulation can promote greater blood circulation in the upper body while relieving tense, stiff muscles in the area. This combined effect can minimize the physical stress that often triggers migraine headaches. When used regularly on a low frequency setting, the DR-HO'S Pain Therapy System Pro can help individuals with headaches that become more manageable and happen less frequently.
