An RMT Demonstrates the Ultimate At-Home Sciatica Massage.

Tammy Sargent from the Markham Pain Clinic joins us to demonstrate how we can relieve sciatic nerve pain from the comfort of our own home. All you need for this exercise is two exercise balls that fit in the palm of your hand and a firm surface such as a wall or chair. These will be used to apply pressure to the lower back.

How does massage therapy relieve sciatic pain?

Your sciatic pain flares up when the sciatic nerve roots in your lower back are pinched or irritated. Massage therapy helps alleviate the pinched or irritated sciatic nerve pain in a few ways:

  • Tight lower back muscles can place stress on your nerve roots. Massage therapy loosens these muscles and helps prevent pinching or irritation.
  • A massage encourages the release of pain-fighting endorphins—this can provide temporary relief from symptoms like the throbbing pain in your foot or the burning sensation in your leg.
